MEGA PELAGIC in Peru

By Gunnar Engblom of Kolibri Expeditons

Megapelagic in Lima for three days Nov 18-20.

Kolibri Expeditions is running the first ever multiday pelagic birdwatching and whalewatching trip from Lima on Nov 18-20, where we shall be looking out both for a coctail of Storm-Petrels as well as many rarely seen cetaceans. We are chartering 18m Catamaran Spondylus, which provides and excellent platform for spotting marine life some 35-40 nautical miles into the Humboldt current. At night we seek shelter at the outlaying islets called Hormigas.

It is unusual to run pelagics this long time in Peru. On most pelagics, you have very little time with the birds. Now we shall be chumming for several hours which will allow us fantastic photographic opportunities.

Apart from birds such as Markham's, Ringed and Wedge-rumped Storm-Petrels, Cockilaria Petrels, Waved Albatros, and many more, we also have a good chance to see the very little known Pyrmy Blue Whale and Pygmy Fin Whale, that recently have been seen and photographed on the Peruvian coast off Lima. Furthermore, we shall be looking out for the recently described Peruvian Beaked Whale.
Dusky Dolphins are plentyful, and we should see plenty Humpback Whales as November is the prime time for whale migration.

There shall also be two follow-up pelagics on November 21 and 22, that shall reap the benefits of what has been discovered during the 3 day trip.
